The ELL Consortium is committed to helping school leaders and teachers improve their abilities to effectively educate our city's ELL student population. Test Prep & Support for ELLs
In this workshop, Beatriz Mendez and Gessie Fuentes of Family Life Academy provided an overview of each section of the NYSESLAT. Participants received tips on how to administer and score the test, including how to provide testing accommodations for ELLs. School leaders and teachers learned valuable knowledge about creating testing environments conducive to student success.

Putting It All Together: Preparing for the NYSESLAT and ELA Tests
In this last writing workshop series, lead by LitLife, participants learned writing instruction strategies designed to build students’ literacy skills. Strategies from the workshop can be used to prepare students for the statewide ELA and NYSESLAT. MARCH 15 focused on grades 6-12 and MARCH 22 on grades 3-5, and MARCH 30 on grades K-2.




Building ELLs' Academic Language Proficiency in Math
Helping ELLs become more proficient in their use and understanding of academic language is crucial to helping them achieve academic success. In this workshop, Nancy Cloud modeled for teachers effective instructional strategies designed to raise students’ comfort and proficiency in mathematics. MARCH 3 focused on K-5 and March 4 focused on grades 6-12. Below are the PowerPoint slides as well as handouts provide to attendees. Please note that documents specific to elementary or secondary grades and are noted as such.

ELL Program Design for New Schools
The objective of this two-part introductory workshop is to familiarize planning teams with the law and how it pertains to school services. for English Language Learners (ELLs) Participants discussed the nuts and bolts of what a sound ELL program should incorporate. On JANUARY 18th, Aretha Miller, VP of School Supports at the NYC Charter School Center, provided participants with information on programmatic and compliance issues regarding ELLs. On FEBRUARY 10th, Ms. Miller and Marilyn Calo, School Leader of Family Life Academy Charter School, discussed program design, including testing, curriculum, assessment, and recruitment.

Literacy Across the Content Areas
LitLife returned in JANUARY to host workshops for teachers in grades K-12. In these workshops participants built on the skills and knowledge they acquired during the Oct. 19-22 workshops/trainings. Special emphasis, however, was placed on building students’ content area knowledge and English language proficiency. JANUARY 11 will focused on grades 6-12, JANUARY 19 on grades K-2, and JANUARY 26 on grades 3-5.

Building ELLs’ Math and Science Skills
